Snake Bite App Saving Lives

Snake bite app technology is having a huge impact on the lives of people in India, especially in rural communities. Dubbed ‘the Uber of Snakes’ these apps are making a massive difference.

Snake Bite App: solving a problem

India suffers more snake bites per year than any other country, and more deaths per year than any other country, with an average of 58,000 people in India dying from snake bites every year. People living in rural, agricultural communities are most at risk, partly because they are more likely to come into contact with a snake but also because, if bitten, they are often not able to access proper care quickly enough. Most snake bites are treated successfully, if treated on time and if the snake species is known to the caregiver. The first hour after a snake bite is known as the golden hour. If a person is able to get to suitable healthcare within that hour then their chance of a full recovery is excellent.

Globally, around 80,000 to 140,000 people are bitten by snakes every year. Around 300,000 people are left with permanent disability as a result of snake bites.

Sarpa (Snake Awareness, Rescue and Protection App) is one of the apps making a huge difference and saving lives. It has been developed by the Forestry Commission and Wildlife Trust of India.  Other apps available include SnakeHub, SnakeLens and Snakepedia.  These apps work by providing information about the snakes of India. They contain images, identification methods and first aid advice. Some of them go even further and connect the app user in real time to an expert who can offer them live assistance.

The apps are manned by a network of local wildlife experts. They protect not just the human bite victim, but also the snakes and therefore the local biodiversity and global environment. So everyone is a winner.

These are just one of many examples of how tech is improving the lives of millions of people world wide. Digital transformation is a powerful tool that is being utilised across the globe to improve the world.
